UNI Assurance Plan
November 5, 2001

We are pleased to announce that the Teacher Education Program at the University of Northern Iowa will now provide an Early Years of Teaching Assurance Program to the school districts of Iowa. In short, if you hire a UNI teacher education graduate and find that new teacher lacking in some aspects of their preparation to teach, UNI will work with you and the new teacher to develop an implementation plan. We will provide this at no cost to the school district. The new teacher must be in his/her first two [2] years of teaching and be assigned to teach in an area in which they were recommended for licensure by UNI.

Dr. Rori Carson, UNI Director of Teacher Education, is the contact person for the Early Years of Teaching Assurance Program. Dr. Carson can be reached at:

For UNI Graduates in Their First Two Years
of Teaching in Iowa Schools

  • Should a teacher in his/her first two years of teaching in an Iowa school and the school district mutually request assistance from the University of Northern Iowa, the University will participate in an assessment process in cooperation with the teacher and the district to agree on an individualized plan for improving the teacher's performance. To be eligible for the program the new teacher must be teaching in an area in which he/she was recommended for licensure by UNI.

  • The University will assume leadership in coordinating and assisting in the implementation of the assistance plan with the cooperation of the teacher and the district.

  • Development of the implementation plan will be at no cost to the school district.

  • The school district must ultimately decide if performance has improved to the point where employment of the teacher will be extended beyond the probationary period.
