What academic experiences have had a major impact on you? As an undergraduate at
UNI, I had the opportunity to student teach in Melbourne, Australia. This experience opened my mind to teaching in
other countries, and gave me a chance to teach students from many different cultures. In Australia, no textbooks were
used in the classroom. I learned to teach using other resources such as tradebooks and lots of hands-on activities.
I think it really helped me to grow as an educator. |
How has your College of Education scholarship created opportunities for you?
Receiving this scholarship has made it possible for me to earn my Master’s Degree without having to increase my student loans
from my undergraduate work. I will be able to focus on my classwork instead of having to find a second job. This also will
leave me time to serve in several education related organizations. I am secretary for our local branch of the National Education
Association. I am also serving as president of the Northeast Iowa Reading Council, and chairperson of our school’s elementary
technology committee. |
What would you tell a prospective student who’s considering the UNI teacher education program?
UNI has a very high quality teacher education staff. They are willing to help you and take an
interest in your success on a personal level. UNI is a well respected university for teacher
education. Schools will look at your resume and when they see you earned your degree at UNI they
will be impressed. I heard this many times when I was searching for a position as a teacher. |
What are your career plans?
I would like to eventually earn my Ed.D. degree and teach at the college level. My preference
would be to teach in the area of literacy. I want to share my knowledge and love of teaching with
- others who are excited about entering this field! |
