Codie Fetters
Duea Endowed Scholarship Recipient

Majors
Elementary Education, Middle Level Education

Hometown:
Eldora, IA

Why did you chose UNI's Teacher Education program:
I have always enjoyed working with young kids and wanted to major in Elementary Education. I had heard that UNI offered an excellent teaching program and when I was offered a football scholarship my freshman year, it worked out pretty well for my teaching interests also.

What academic experiences have had a major impact on you :
I never really put much thought into the actual aspect of teaching until I took the class Schools in American Society that made me look at the teaching profession in a whole different light.

How has your College of Education scholarship created opportunities for you :
All you read in the paper nowadays is how much debt college students have accumulated throughout their college years. Any scholarship received is that much less that you have to borrow and therefore, that much less to pay back once you have graduated.

What would you tell a prospective student who’s considering the UNI teacher education program:
The program is one of the highest rated in the state, very “student friendly”, teachers are more than willing to assist you with your questions or problems, and there are many scholarship opportunities. Also, if you’re a guy, the girl to guy ratio is outstanding!!

What are your career plans :
I came from a smaller school (Eldora, IA), where you got a lot of one-on-one attention in the classroom and on the playing field. I hope to student teach in a smaller school and gain employment in such a system where I can teach in the elementary and possibly coach a high school sport, preferably football. My long term plans include graduate school with the possibility of becoming either a guidance counselor or superintendent.
