Dr. Z's Creative Cookbook for Collaborative Communication:
On Wednesday, December 3, Dr. Leigh Zeitz (Curriculum and Instruction) will present a nationwide webinar about Web 2.0 tools that can help students and faculty collaborate in writing, teaching and overall communication. This webinar is sponsored by the International Society for Technology Education (ISTE). The 1-hour program will be viewed in Schindler Education Center 403 at 3:00 pm. Please come and join us. UNI CELEBRATES AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK:
UNI has a 132-year history in teacher education and will celebrate American Education Week, Nov. 16-22. UNI will recognize its 17,000 plus alumni educators in the U.S. and is planning special programs with area schools. For more information, contact Lindsey Rhodes, 3-6728.

CHARACTER COUNTS WORKSHOP:
A Character Counts workshop for pre-service teachers will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7, at the Center for Multicultural Education in Maucker Union. Call 3-3658 or e-mail paulsonr@uni.edu to register. Participants will be required to purchase a $10 CC workbook. Students must attend the entire session to receive a certificate of participation. Sponsored by College of Education, the Institute for Character Development, and the GBPAC.

FALL TEACHER EDUCATION CONVOCATION:
The 36th Teacher Education Induction Convocation will be held at 4 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 30, in GBPAC. Invitations have been sent to 320 UNI teacher education students eligible for induction. John Storm, modern languages, is the convocation speaker. Faculty and staff are invited to attend to honor the students being inducted.

College of Education Faculty Changes:
Mary Herring, interim department head and associate professor in Curriculum & Instruction, has been named interim associate dean of the College of Education. She will replace Biff Williams who has accepted a position as Dean of the College of Nursing, Health, and Human Services at Indiana State University. Jill Uhlenberg, assistant professor in Curriculum & Instruction, will serve as interim department head of Curriculum & Instruction.

UNI Early Childhood Education Summit: Focus on Quality-Quality Math and Science Curriculum for Preschool Teachers
Will be held on September 12-13, 2008 in the Schindler Education Center. Karen Worth, Senior Research Scientist at the Center for Science Education, Education Development Center, Inc., will give a keynote presentation titled, "Science and Young Children: A Natural Fit." Karen Worth is also noted for her co-authorship of the Young Scientist Series, a well-known science curriculum for children ages three to five developed with funding from the National Science Foundation.

Human Performance Center to be dedicated
UNI's new Human Performance Center will be dedicated in a ceremony at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 4. A reception and tours of the center-- located west of Hudson Road, between UNI's Wellness & Recreation Center and the UNI-Dome-- will follow the ceremony.

Reception to Honor COE Faculty Award Winners

Prior Knowledge: Learning from What We Already Know
Parents play a key role in their children's learning. Understanding in
real ways how parents can help is something we can teach and modeling is a great way to accomplish this.  A small team of literacy education and Price lab educators worked with Joe Marchesani and his video production team to create a model video for parents on using children's prior knkowledge to learn new information. 40th Annual Beginning Reading Conference

UNI Office of Teacher Education to Host Professional Development Event:
UNI's Office of Teacher Education is hosting a professional development day for all UNI professional education faculty in the teacher education program. The event, "Backmapping to the Future: Listening to the Evidence," will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 29, in the UNI Commons Ballroom. The keynote speaker is Karen Smith, chief operating officer for the National Commissions on Teaching and America's Future. UNI to host school administrators for diversity workshop:
Approximately 45 Iowa school administrators will visit the University of Northern Iowa for a diversity workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 29 in the Alumni Suite at the McLeod Center. The workshop, "The Changing Face of Iowa Students," coordinated by UNI's Educational Leadership program will discuss challenges and success in schools serving Iowa's increasingly diverse pre-K through12 students. Jenny Connolly, graduate student in post secondary education and student affairs, was recently selected as one of the Waterloo Courier’s 20 Under 40 for 2007. This prestigious award was presented to 20 individuals under the age of 40 that are making a difference in the Cedar Valley. Read more
