VISION
The University of Northern Iowa's College of Education will be noted nationally and internationally as the premier professional college of education. We value leadership and excellence in the preparation of educational and human service professionals, innovations in best professional practice, and strong collaborative relationships with the professions and communities we serve.

MISSION
As a premier professional college of education, the University of Northern Iowa's College of Education believes that the preparation of educators for school and non-school settings is a moral imperative - - the future of our nation depends on the success of this effort. Our efforts support the tripartite mission of the university of teaching, research and service in the following ways:

  1. the College exists to prepare educational and human service professionals for a variety of direct service and human leadership roles in school and non-school settings;
  2. faculty members in the College conduct applied and basic research in the areas of teaching and learning, human performance, human health and health promotion, human growth and development, and educational policy, and;
  3. the College provides service on local, state, regional, national and international levels.

By doing so, the College of Education effectively serves the profession by assuming leadership roles for the improvement of education and human services.

GOALS
 
Goal 1: Provide intellectually stimulating and challenging experiences for students that broaden and deepen their perspective and awareness.
Objective 1A: Strengthen the support offered to enhance student research and scholarly efforts.
Objective 1B: Strengthen programs by providing more experiential learning opportunities in a range of diverse settings.
Objective 1C: Build on excellence in the graduate program.
Objective 1D: Strengthen undergraduate education programs, including the links between liberal arts studies and the strong education core.
   
Goal 2: Support creative and intellectually rigorous teaching and scholarship.
Objective 2A: Increase collaborative efforts within and among departments and colleges to provide meaningful and non-redundant curricular content.
Objective 2B: Create demonstration sites and labs in the use of technology throughout all curricular areas and departments in the College of Education.
Objective 2C: Strengthen the support offered to faculty research and scholarly efforts.
Objective 2D: Strengthen the support to improve the quality of instruction on campus, off campus, and through distance learning technology.
   
Goal 3: Expand the involvement of the College of Education in addressing critical local, state, national and global needs that also enrich the educational experiences offered by the College.
Objective 3A: Develop new programs and licensure/endorsements that reflect the changing needs of Iowa and the nation.
Objective 3B: Support initiatives to secure local, state, and national resources for the preparation of teachers and other certified and licensed professionals.
Objective 3C: Increase support for program changes to reflect new accreditation and licensure requirements.
Objective 3D: Enhance and coordinate efforts and outreach activities with school and non-school programs.
Objective 3E: Provide leadership at the state, national, and global levels.
Objective 3F: Develop curricular initiatives that support educational reform.
Objective 3G: Increase the availability of distance learning, continuing education and internet accessible professional development opportunities to meet the needs of students and practicing professionals.
   
Goal 4: Strengthen the College of Education culture characterized by diversity, collegiality and mutual respect.
Objective 4A: Recruit, sustain and retain diverse and highly qualified faculty and staff.
Objective 4B: Increase the number and graduation rates of American ethnic minority students and international students by providing meaningful support and a relevant curriculum
Objective 4C: Foster a supportive living, learning and working environment with services and programs that promote individual well being and effective governance
Objective 4D: Increase faculty support and participation in service activities within the College and the University.
Objective 4E: Increase faculty, staff, and student participation in individual and community-oriented wellness-related activities.
   
Goal 5: Increase COE resources, including capital, physical and informational.
Objective 5A: Seek adequate university support to sustain current levels of excellence in programs that distinguish the university.
Objective 5B: Work within the university to establish an equitable budgeting process for the College of Education.
Objective 5C: Provide tenure, tenure-track faculty/student ratio that supports the modeling of effective practices in education.
Objective 5D: Renovate, expand, and repair facilities to meet programmatic needs, including the renovation/redesign/rebuilding of Price Laboratory School, construction of the Human Performance Center and implementation of the "West Campus Plan".
Objective 5E: Maintain and enhance technologically appropriate teaching and learning facilities and equipment.
Objective 5F: Assist College of Education faculty members in becoming more aware of grant and donor opportunities.
   
Goal 6: Establish strong, mutually beneficial relationships with external constituencies.
Objective 6A: Establish and maintain ties between the College of Education and external constituencies (i.e., legislators, media outlets, state leaders).
Objective 6B: Increase the number of College of Education faculty and administrators serving on state and national committees.
Objective 6C: Ensure that a wide variety of our external constituencies are reflected on the College of Education Advisory Board.
