When you come to UNI, you’ll
find a friendly atmosphere and scholarship of the
highest quality. You will learn from professors who
are leaders in their fields of study. In and out of
the classroom, you’ll have access to state-of-the-art
technology. Your classroom experience will be augmented
by the many student organizations and international
opportunities that form UNI’s culture
of excellence and service.
US
News & World Report ranks UNI second among
the Midwest’s top public universities. Kiplinger’s
Personal Finance Magazine calls UNI one of the
nation’s top 100 values in public colleges.
The reason is simple: the quality of the real-world
opportunities and classroom experience you’ll
find at UNI is virtually unique in the Midwest.
At the College of Education, 2,755 graduate and undergraduate
students study under 247 faculty. Courses here are
dynamic and interactive, taught almost exclusively
by professors, not graduate assistants. The study
of education at UNI involves much more than sitting
in a classroom. Here, education majors complete 80+
hours of field experience
before they begin student teaching. At our laboratory
school, at the Freeburg
Center for Early Education, and in our many research
and service programs, cutting-edge theory is put into
practice - with students participating as leaders
as well as learners.
Come visit UNI. See our beautiful
campus, visit our classes, and tour our facilities. We’re proud of what
we do, and we invite you to join us.
Brief History
The College of Education is the oldest department
on campus; in fact, UNI began as a teacher preparation
school in 1876. The university was renamed the Iowa
State Teachers College in 1909, and the State College
of Iowa in 1961. Not until that year did the college
allow its students to graduate without completing
the teacher preparation sequence.
Since its formation as a college within the University, the
College of Education’s commitment to excellence
has established UNI as one of the Midwest’s
premier teacher preparation schools. Our university
website features a detailed history
of the university.
