Based on the assumption that "People Tend to Teach the Way They Were Taught," this course has been designed as a professional development experience for teachers that will provide science content instruction in a manner that showcases alternatives to traditional pedagogy. The class was designed with the conviction that any teacher needs the opportunity to confirm the value of alternative pedagogical strategies by experiencing the impact these approaches can have on their own learning of scientific information. With the recognition that many university educators send the message, "Do as I Say, Not as I Do" by subjecting teachers to instruction that espouses one principle while modeling its antithesis, this will be a very different experience. The format will support constructivism as a learning theory by allowing teachers to have the opportunity to learn by incorporating new knowledge into their own existing conceptual frameworks. Class sessions were taught by a variety of members of the faculty in the College of Natural Sciences to provide breadth and variety. The individualized assessment through the course portfolio is structured to encourage participants to direct their own learning, growth, and personal intellectual change.
