A Taste of The Chinese American Experience in the U.S.
Chinese Americans have faced a long struggle for equality and identity in America. In 1882, Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, which prevented Chinese immigration and it was extended for the next sixty years. By 1924, all Asian immigrants, with the exception of Filipinos were fully excluded by law, denied citizenship and naturalization, and prevented from marrying Caucasians or owning land. In 1943, the Magnuson Act was passed which repealed the Chinese Exclusion Act, a quota of 105 immigrants per year was set. In 1945, The War Brides Act was passed, which allowed 6,000 Chinese women to enter the U.S. as brides of Chinese American soldiers. It wasn’t until 1965 that non-restrictive quotas of an annual 20,000 immigrants per country were established.

Other discriminatory practices towards the Chinese Americans led them to revolt. In 1933 a Laundry Tax was passed, which made laundrymen pay $1000 (typically they made half that in profit each year). They formed the Chinese Hand Laundry Association and fought against the tax, and they were eventually successful. World War II brought a great disdain for the Asians in America, although 40% of New York’s Chinese men fought in the war. The Asian American movement began in the late ‘60s with the progress of the feminist movement. Asians Americans in New York and across the country began to unite and form activist groups to fight for their rights and equality.
