A letter from Dr. Michael D. Blackwell, Director for Multicultural Education |

As director for multicultural education at the University of Northern Iowa, I count it both a pleasure and a privilege to be part of those on campus ready to help you acclimate to this University and its surrounding community. Part of my task is ensuring that UNI is a dynamic, challenging and comfortable place for all. As we continue to increase the ethnic and cultural diversity on this campus, I will work to guarantee that multicultural awareness, understanding and fairness are the norms, not the exceptions. One vehicle by which I can accomplish these objectives is the Center for Multicultural Education. The center was formally established in February 1971 and provides cultural, educational and social activities and programs for the entire UNI community. It is also a resource office for learning about various cultures, lifestyles and world views. The Cultural Center houses the Ethnic Student Senate, comprised of leaders of the four ethnic student unions: Native American, Latino, Asian American and African American. These unions, in conjunction with the Cultural Center, offer specific programming for students. What a great opportunity lies before you. Your career at UNI may well prove to be one of the most mind-expanding and personally enriching periods in your life. I look forward to meeting you. |
