2007 Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15, the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18.

The term Hispanic, as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, refers to Spanish-speaking people in the United States of any race. On the 2000 Census form, people of Spanish/Hispanic/Latino origin could identify themselves as Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, or "other Spanish/
Hispanic/Latino." More than 35 million people identified themselves as Hispanic or Latino on the 2000 Census.

Hispanic Heritage Month Events

Day of the Dead Altar & Procession < Photos >

The procession begins at St. Stephen’s Student Center and ends at the Day of the Dead altar in the CME lobby. Optional mass following at St. Stephens.
October 30, 8:00 PM
Sponsored by the CME

Throughout the month of October, everyone is invited to bring a picture of a loved one for the Day of the Dead Altar in the lobby of the CME (109 MAU) at UNI. This event is an ancient Aztec celebration of the memory of the deceased ancestors with an emphasis on celebrating and honoring the lives of the deceased, rather than fearing evil or malevolent spirits. Join us in adding
to or viewing the pictures of many loved ones from the Cedar Valley who are honored and joyously celebrated this month.
