The newly established G.P.S. (Gaining Panther Success) Mentor Program is a program for new UNI students from diverse backgrounds and is located at the Center for Multicultural Education. The program matches new students with mentors for their first year at UNI and provides various social and educational programming for the participants throughout the year. Mentors and mentees meet individually and in group settings. The program is supported by several sources which also provide programmatic input: the Center for Multicultural Education, the Center for Academic Achievement, the Office of Enrollment Services, and the Division of Educational and Student Services.
Leading the administration of the G.P.S. Mentor Program is the Assistant Director for Multicultural Education who supervises the Program Coordinator(s), case management assistants and office assistants assigned to this program. The program coordinator carries out many of the administrative, personnel, and program planning duties, in addition to monitoring the 8-10 mentors and their effectiveness and utilization of skills they learned in training at the beginning of the year. The case management assistant, as its title suggests, carries out more clinical and case management duties which are aimed to assist in the retention of the participants, not only in the program, but in higher education at UNI as well. |

Benefits student would accrue through this experience: The student in this position will be receiving hands-on experience in administration, program planning, leadership development, personnel, and case work in a growing and relatively new mentoring program, which focuses on the retention of minority students at UNI. These programs are housed in the newly located and project expanding Center for Multicultural Education (CME). This position offers experiential learning in the principles of social work, sociology, family services, leadership, and leisure, youth, & family services as well as assessments, progress tracking, referrals, intervention, and the recruiting and retaining of program participants (mentors and mentees). The student in this position will have an advantage in the job search process because of their supervisory, leadership, and coordination experience as a G.P.S. Mentor Program Coordinator at the CME. Additionally, this student will have many opportunities to build relationships with the CME’s and Center for Academic Achievement administration and staff, along with other staff within UNI’s Educational and Student Services Division.
Note: Depending on number of hours coordinator is able to provide to program per week, a second coordinator may be arranged through employment or through acquiring an additional practicum placement so that a division of duties can occur that will work better with the student’s academic load and intended hours per week.
Responsibilities student would be given: This student will be identified as the G.P.S. Mentor Program Coordinator for this particular program and will serve as the initial program liaison for all CME staff and outside inquiries. This student will report to the Assistant Director for Multicultural Education and will assist the Assistant Director with managing the program’s budget and expenses, including personnel (paid mentors). This student coordinates and facilitates the programming of bi-weekly group activities for up to fifty participants, monthly mentor staff meetings for up to ten mentors, monthly planning committee meetings for up to five members, and all off-campus activities. This student will also work closely with the department secretary in coordinating financial transactions, tracking of payroll expenses up to $10,000 and program expenses up to $6,000 related to the program. This student will also work closely with the Center for Academic Achievement director regarding the satisfactory academic progress of participants. This student also assists with developing strategies for recruiting, retaining, and matching mentees and mentors as well as the hiring process in the spring for new mentors for the following year. All new mentors go through twelve hours of training, of which, the coordinator assists in facilitating and organizing at least half of the training sessions. Other responsibilities include compiling data on program effectiveness, suggesting areas of improvement for the program as situations arise. This student would also assist the Assistant Director for Multicultural Education in supervising program or office assistants assigned to this program.
