FIPSE Grant Summer Program

CIEP was fortunate to host a small group of scholars from Brazil for a four-week special program. This special program was a prelude to the group's larger educational experience as undergraduate exchange scholars at the University of Northern Iowa and included a 2-week academic workshop conducted by Julie Zagor and Tatiana Gusakova. The purpose of the workshop was to prepare the participants for the rigors of full-time academic study at the University of Northern Iowa. The workshop was especially useful in helping the participants understand the cultural and academic requirements for studying in an American higher education setting. The facilitators included business and science content and focused on styles of academic communication, both written and verbal; understanding the construction of academic texts, and what non-native speakers should avoid as international students in an American university setting, as an example.

The participants were exceptionally gifted students and competed for the opportunity to attend UNI as part of a grant under the Fund for the Improvement of Post Secondary Education (FIPSE) as administred by the U.S. Government. Professor and Dr. Christine Schrage was the force for making this all happen.
