University of Northern Iowa
#15 Best Midwest University – U.S. News
In 2011, the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) was ranked the 15th best university in the Midwest by U.S. News. These rankings are based on a variety of factors including: graduation rates, campus life, academic offerings, activities, sports, cost, availability of financial aid, peer assessments, quality of faculty, class size, and financial resources.
Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS) Gold Award
In 2011, UNI received the gold award from the Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System. The award was given based on the sustainability progress of UNI’s education, research, operations, planning, administration, and innovation. UNI is the only institution in Iowa that has achieved the Gold STAR status.
The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll Finalist
In 2010, UNI was a finalist in the United States President’s Higher Education Community Service Roll. UNI has consistently placed on this honor roll which recognizes colleges and universities in the United States for their dedication to community service. UNI is the only university in Iowa to be named a finalist for this award.
UNI Culture and Intensive English Program
Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA)
The CIEP is accredited by the Commission on English Program Accreditation (CEA) under the authority of the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, D.C. The CEA regularly reviews and regulates standards for intensive English programs wishing to be accredited. The CEA is the only officially recognized accrediting body in the United States and programs achieving accreditation status must undergo a rigorous process which includes a site visit, self-study report, and subsequent updates and reports after initial accreditation.
American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP)
The UNI CIEP is a member of the American Association of Intensive English Program. This association is a group of 300 institutions in the United States who are either ACCET or CEA accredited or operate under a college or university that is accredited. This prestigious group strives to provide the highest quality of education to their students.
University and College Intensive English Programs (UCIEP)
UNI CIEP is one of only three universities in Iowa to become a member of the UCIEP. This group was founded in 1967 and works to promote excellence in intensive English programs by providing quality curriculum, instruction and administration.

In 2011, Iowa was ranked as the 6th best state to live by Morgan Quitno Press. This ranking was given based on 44 livability factors including: entertainment, family, income, housing, available transportation and job opportunities.
Cedar Falls
Great American Main Street
Each year, the National Trust Main Street Center (NTMSC) awards the Great American Main Street Award to five communities in the United States. In 2002, Cedar Falls received this award for exemplifying the use of Main Street to revitalize downtown traditions and neighborhoods.
