A Dean's Fund for Excellence has been established for the College of
Humanities
and Fine Arts. Funds in this account will enable the dean to
ensure
opportunities for their students, enhance innovative programs, and
encourage
outstanding faculty. It will also provide the college with the flexibility
and means
to meet the constantly and rapidly changing needs of education.
Ensure Opportunities for Students
Many student groups in CHFA, ranging from formal groups such as Jazz Band I and
the
Concert Chorale to special interest groups such as Humanities majors to classes
in all eight departments have frequent need to travel to perform, participate, or experience. These trips
fall outside of the definitions for experiential learning but are extremely important in our efforts to provide a full and well-rounded education to our students.
This type of funding supports the mission of the University of Northern Iowa. It impacts recruitment and retention of students and helps us to fulfill one of the college's goals: "We shall provide an excellent undergraduate and graduate education, including breadth and depth of experience, for all students majoring in disciplines offered by the college."
Enhance Excellent Programs
Gifts to the Dean's Fund for Excellence would also enable UNI to make excellent programs even better. They may be used for student and research support, student and faculty conferences, guest artists and lecturers and many other enhancements essential to program distinction.
Encourage Outstanding Faculty
Nationwide, the competition for outstanding faculty is keen. One of the challenges facing UNI is the recruitment and retention of outstanding faculty. The Dean's Fund for Excellence could be used to encourage the faculty to develop and create effective teaching methods and programs, to seek new learning opportunities for themselves and their students, and to be assured of the support and respect of the college for their efforts on behalf of their students.
Priorities for this Year
*Special guest speakers and performers, exposing students to professionals in their fields of
interest.
*Experiential learning and undergraduate research for students, providing hands-on, practical applications in their areas of interest.
*Promotion of artistic activity through single or multi-day seminars offered by master teachers and artists.
*Faculty development that makes a difference in the quality of faculty CHFA attracts, fosters, and retains.
*Travel to regional and national conferences by outstanding students to present their research funds.
