UNI's Black Student Union, Center for Multicultural Education and the Campus Activities Board have planned events throughout February to celebrate Black History Month.

A TRIBUTE TO BLACKS IN THE CEDAR VALLEY

From Crispus Attucks, the first soldier to die in the Revolutionary War to the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II to 23 year old 2nd Lt. Emily Perez killed in Iraq while leading her platoon becoming the 64th woman killed in the Iraq/Afghanistan conflict, black men and women have served to keep America free. Though only 12% of theUS population, African Americans account for 20% of the military. Of the 18% of active duty women in the military nearly 1/3rd are African American women.
During Black History Month, the African American Historical and Cultural Museum Waterloo and Sister Soldier Network, an organization of African American Military Women invite the community to a special tribute to honor those who have served our country and community in America’s Armed Services. Special features include recognition from political leaders, tribute to four special veterans who have served the community well after discharge and an Honoring the Fallen Soldier ceremony.
Special invitations are extended to Gold Star families, veterans, active duty, guard and reservists. This event is free and open to the public. Reservations can be made at (319) 504-1204 or emailing brooks1948@gmail.com
