Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
INSTRUCTOR

Position:             Non-tenure track, one-year term, instructor position in the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department.  The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to teaching and a willingness to serve on departmental committees.  The candidate will have a B.S. and M.S. degree in chemistry or closely related discipline and will teach introductory chemistry courses, including lectures and laboratories.  

Appointment:     August 2009

Salary:                 Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits include TIAA-CREF retirement plan, group life, disability, medical, and dental coverage.

Qualifications:   Requirements include a B.S. and M.S. degree in chemistry or closely related discipline.  A Ph.D. is preferred.  Pre-employment background checks are required.

Department:       The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry currently has fourteen full time faculty members, two laboratory specialists, a departmental secretary and an electronics technician. The faculty specializations include analytical chemistry, biochemistry, chemical education, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry and environmental chemistry. The emphasis of the department is on both teaching and research at the undergraduate and graduate level (MS). The department offers an MS degree in Chemistry, a Professional Science Masters (PSM) degree in Applied Chemistry and Biochemistry, and an MA degree in Science Teaching. The department also contributes to graduate programs in environmental science and science education. The department has approximately 100 chemistry and biochemistry majors and offers ACS-certified BS degrees in both chemistry and biochemistry, as well as BA degrees with emphases in chemistry, biochemistry, chemistry teaching and chemistry marketing. The department graduates more undergraduate majors in chemistry than any other institution within the state. The chemistry department has excellent physical facilities for both teaching and research. The instrumentation in the department includes various spectrometers (IR, UV, near IR, Raman, 400 MHz multinuclear NMR, LC-MS and GC -MS), gas chromatographs, HPLC, TGA, DSC, AFM, STM, scintillation counter, ultracentrifuge, and electrophoresis. The department also has excellent computational facilities which are supported by the college.

Department of Chemistry - Student Assistant


Position of Student Assistant:
Duties of a student assistant include assisting in a laboratory setting (lab class) and answering questions concerning the experiment being performed. They are responsible for preparing chemicals used in the laboratory and supervising their use and disposal. Assistants will also assist students in the use of equipment such as computers, electronic balances, and may include more technically advanced equipment such as Gas Chromatographs, High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Ion Detection.
The student assistant is responsible for maintaining clean and safe working environment for the students. This entails ensuring students adhere to the safety rules and guidelines established by Chemistry Department, maintenance of laboratory equipment, and directing students to keep their work areas clean. Assistants will ensure the lab is kept neat and orderly by directing students to clean up their assigned equipment, balances, benches and laboratory following each laboratory period.
Students are often assigned to stockroom duties as well. Their work assignments often include cleaning the stockroom and glassware, assisting in maintaining an accurate inventory of chemicals, MSDS sheets, and equipment. Students are assigned other duties including cleaning of individual laboratories, ensuring electronic balances and pH meters are properly maintained and calibrated. They will also assist the supervisor in the proper disposal of hazardous waste.
