Exploring Earth Science at the University of Northern Iowa

Education should provide the tools for a widening and deepening of life, for increased appreciation of all one sees or experiences.  It should equip a person to live well, to understand what is happening about him/her, for to live well one must live with awareness. - Louis L’Amour

Philosophy

I firmly believe in Aldo Leopold’s statement,

“The objective is to teach the student to see the land, to understand what he or she sees, and enjoy what he or she understands. I say land rather than wildlife, because wildlife cannot be understood without understanding the landscape as a whole”

As Aldo Leopold did with his life, I work to provide you with opportunities not only to obtain knowledge of our natural surroundings but appreciate what these natural resources mean to our current and future quality of life

Classes and Technology

Classes I teach regularly - Introduction to Geology & Inquiry into Earth Science (IiES)

Technology - I use technology in the classroom to show interactive movies, animations, and current events that are displayed on 'real time' dynamic web pages.

When possible I enjoy leaving the walls of the classroom and teaching student in the best laboratory of all Nature. I feel that if students are to truly understand the dynamic processes that shape our landscapes and lives, students must view and investigate these processes in person.
