Student Achievement: Virginia
"I am currently a junior, majoring in Actuarial Science in the department of Mathematics. I transferred from the University of Memphis, located in my hometown of Memphis, Tennessee. The Academic Learning Center at UNI made my transition simple. Kathleen Peters introduced me to the math coordinator Latricia Hylton, who explained how fierce CHAS students are and must be. Coupled with the Actuarial Science Club, where actuarial science majors can meet with professionals in the field, and studying under Dr. Scharron Clayton, I know coming to UNI and being in CHAS was the best choice for me.
"I am also a LSAMP scholar and this spring I got to attend the National Science Foundation’s Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) spring 2013 conference. I had the pleasure of meeting the LSAMP Alliance Advocates Liaison, who informed me of outreach programs designed to raise the interest of Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) among minority children. That conversation ignited my desire to increase the knowledge of my discipline, so that I could one day become the social capital of one of those children. As a LSAMP Scholar I work closely with Departmental staff which has resulted in attaining a summer research position in probability. Becoming a UNI LSAMP Scholar is my greatest achievement yet! It is truly an unmatched experience. I am a proud Panther!"
