Environmental Issues Instuction: It Does Make a Difference

Carroll Today. Vol. 17 Issue 38. Sept. 22, 2000

Above: Students from eii classes share with the community.

Results of Student Inventories:

T-SCORES

Forests in a Changing Climate (2003) T-Scores

The Forests sample shows a comparison of groups of 47 and 42 sixth grade students. One group, taught by two teachers, had the entire eii unit and the other group, taught by two other teachers in the same school, had some environmental activities, but not the eii unit.

Biomes in a Changing Climate (2002) T-Scores

The Biomes sample is upper elementary from a Dubuque workshop. Many of the content items are not shown because they always have a very high level of increase from pre to post intruction. Data shows that kids believe they do understand environmental issues and can, and do, make a difference.

Species in a Changing Climate (2001) T-Scores

Species Loss item 2 is an example of a -1.96+ significance. Item 5 is interesting in that students thought environmental issues were difficult before the unit because they did not know about them. After the unit, they realized that environmental issues are difficult even when you know a lot about them. The Species Loss sample includes 450 students from middle through high school.

T-SCORES

Iowa's Roadside Prairies (2007) T-scores

This is a graph of the T-scores from the Teaching Skill Inventories taken during both the Dubuque and West Des Moines workshops. The T-score is the amount of change between the pre and post inventory. A change of 1.96 or higher is significant. As you can see, a large improvement was made on each item.
