The Job Search
Ask any recruiter what they are looking for when screening candidates and you will hear them all say experience is the key. Just look at your resume - one page filled corner to corner and only three lines indicating what you are studying.
To Get Hired (for any job)
- Experience: Find positions that will give you direct skills needed for your future career. For example, if you want to go to medical school, look for opportunities in a clinic or as a CNA. When working part-time, ask for more responsibility. It is not just where and what you do, it is how you do it.
- It's Not What You Know: The truth is, most jobs are not posted and those that are often have preferred (internal) candidates. Get off national job boards and start making personal connections. Use LinkedIn.com, the UNI Alumni Association, and your own personal contacts to find the hidden job market.
- Search Smart: Don't waste your time on large national job boards which are often filled with undesireable jobs (and even scams). Instead, focus on recruiters seeking UNI graduates through CareerCat. Use a good webcrawling job service such as indeed.com or simplyhired.com. Meet with Career Services staff to identify job boards specific to what you want to do.
