College of Social & Behavioral Sciences Co-op Requirements

Unless a department states otherwise, 50 hours of work/volunteer effort with an employer generates one credit hour of academic credit.

 

Design, Textiles, Gerontology, & Family Studies: Students seeking a co-op experience must consult with the Design, Textiles, Gerontology, & Family Studies Department regarding its co-op policies. With departmental approval, students are allowed to do a work experience through the Co-op Program. This is not in lieu of the required internship (31F:195; 31I:195; 31T:195; 31G:195). Cooperative Education credits must be beyond the 120/126 required for graduation or as determined by the professor. Submit the faculty approval for your selected faculty supervisor via on-line. Textile & Apparel area requires 31T:020 (Introduction to Textile & Apparel Industry) as a prerequisite. Department of Design, Textiles, Gerontology, & Family Studies faculty member you wish to do the Co-op experience with: H. Barnes, B. Bass, G. Betrabet-Gulwadi, W.M. Fleming, G. Gute, E. Eshbaugh, A. M. Strauss, M. Widmer. University/General Elective credit. The faculty co-op supervisor determines whether the credit will be graded or credit/no credit at the time of placement. Interior Design may only participate in the Co-op Program for credit/no credit.

Geography:
The student must: 1) Be at least in the JUNIOR year; 2) Have COMPLETED at LEAST 15 credit hours of Geography course work at UNI; 3) Have a minimum UNI GPA of 2.5. Transfers must have completed at least ONE semester at UNI with a GPA of at least 2.5. Priority is given to senior students. Internship must have geographic content. The designated faculty co-op supervisor for this department is Dr. Tim Strauss. Major Elective; Credit/No Credit basis.

History:
The History Department grants one hour of credit for each 40 hours of effort. Public History co-ops allow students to experience history in the public realm. Given the breadth of public history, from museum work to urban planning, from journalistic exposes to internal institutional studies, the possibilities to express history are limitless. Once the area of interest is identified, terms of an internship are agreed upon. Participation in a bi-weekly seminar in the history department is required, as is the writing of a reflective essay. Applied History and courses in Iowa history are strongly recommended. All students should consult with the history department supervisor, BEFORE accepting a position. The designated faculty co-op supervisors are: Dr. Joanne A. Goldman or Dr. Robert F. Martin. Credit is given on a Graded basis. Major Elective credit can be received if pre-requisites are taken. Other terms of credit may be negotiated. Ordinarily, students must have an overall GPA of 3.0 in order to participate in co-op projects.

Political Science:
Students are generally awarded 3 credit hours. The department assigns a faculty co-op supervisor once the co-op position is found. Cooperative Education DOES NOT SUBSTITUTE for the department's own internship (940:181). The designated faculty co-op supervisor for this department is Mike Licari. University/General Elective; Credit/No Credit basis.

Psychology: Students will typically earn 3 hrs. credit for 150 hours work in Psychology -related position approved by the Psychology Cooperative Education Supervisor and the department head. May be repeated once, with a maximum of 6 hr. and 2 semesters in a single position. A maximum of 3 hr. may be applied toward a Psychology major. The semester paper must relate the cooperative education experience to specific psychological theory or concepts, based on assigned readings or appropriate psychological references. Students enrolled in Cooperative Education during the regular school year will also make weekly work-related postings to an online discussion board. Registering for a second semester of Cooperative Education in Psychology requires negotiation of an appropriate second semester project with the Co-op supervisor. Prerequisite: 400:008 [course catalog prior to 2004]; 400:001 [course catalog after 2004], additional coursework in Psychology recommended. Dr. John Williams, (section 7) - Clinical or Social Services related internships; Dr. Michael Gasser, (section 19); students requesting Dr. Gasser as their faculty supervisor must speak with him before submitting the Faculty Approval Form - Industry (e.g. John Deere), business, organizational; Dr. Linda Walsh, (section 10) - all other areas not covered by section 1 or 19. Major Elective credit awarded for Psychology majors or University Elective for majors other than Psychology or for Psychology minors. All are awarded on a Graded basis.


Social Work:
Position must be approved by the major advisor. A term paper or log of experiences, particularly relating placement experience to social work learning, is required.
