College of Natural Sciences Co-op Requirements
Unless a department states otherwise, 50 hours of work/volunteer effort with an employer generates one credit hour of academic credit.
Biology
Awards up to 6 credits per semester for full-time placements. 2.5 minimum GPA. Prerequisites: completion of Biology 840:051 and 840:052, plus at least one other biology course. Chemistry and Biochemistry
Students must be approved by a faculty committee and the department head. Students are encouraged to participate for two terms (semesters). Approval for the first term normally requires the completion of two semesters of chemistry. Normally 3 hours of credit will be allowed for each full-time assignment. Credit may be counted toward chemistry major if requested by the student and approved by the department head at the time of application. A minimum GPA of 2.5 with NO grade below C- in any chemistry course is required for either term. The designated faculty co-op supervisor for this department is S. Coon. Computer Science
To enroll in 810:179, a student must have a declared major in BA degree program in Computer Science or Computer Information Systems or in the BS Degree program in Computer Science. At the time the co-op experience begins, three courses in the major with the 810 prefix must be completed. Two of these courses must be from 810:041; 810:062; 810:063. At least one of these courses must have been completed at UNI. At the time the co-op experience begins the student's GPA must be at least 2.75. Earth Science
Awards four (4) semester hours for full-time placements and two (2) semester hours for parallel placements. Prerequisite: an earth science class. After a position is obtained, majors in the Department of Earth Science should present their project proposal to faculty co-op supervisor. The designated faculty co-op supervisor for this department is Dr. Jim Walters. Credit earned may be applied towards Major Elective credit. The faculty co-op supervisor will determine whether the credit will be Graded/Credit/No Credit at the time of placement.
Industrial Technology
Cooperative Education is strongly recommended for all students in Industrial Technology to acquire work experience related to your intended career. The candidate must have a declared major in the Department of Industrial Technology, be of junior status with a minimum GPA of 2.5, and have at least one semester completed at UNI. Any waiver of departmental requirements requires the approval of the coordinator of the major, the departmental co-op supervisor and the department head. All students must meet first with the department co-op coordinator Michelle Garris. The designated faculty co-op supervisor for FALL 2008: Dr. Ali Kashef. Credit is earned for 80 clock hours of work experience equaling one semester hour of credit. Major Elective; Graded. 3 hour maximum per semester.
Graphic Communications
Cooperative Education is required for at least 3 SH for students receiving the BA in the major.Eligibility includes meeting the departmental requirements, as stated above, plus complete a minimum of 11 semester hours of Graphic Communications technical courses, one of which must be 330:055. Major Credit; Graded basis.
Manufacturing Technology
Cooperative Education is required for at least 1 SH for students receiving the BS degree in Manufacturing Technology. Major Credit; Graded basis for the first placement. Succeeding placements: Graded basis;University or Technical elective.

Mathematics
Non Education: Students majoring in non-teaching mathematics may apply for mathematics co-op placement. At least one semester must have been completed at UNI and 18 hours of Major Credit Mathematics must have been completed with at least 2.5 GPA. A daily/weekly log or final report will be required, if a position is obtained. The designated faculty co-op supervisor for this department is Dr. Syed Kirmani. University Elective; Credit/No Credit basis.
Education: Students with an Elementary major (preferably with a mathematics minor ) or Secondary Mathematics Education major (preferably with junior standing) may apply for a mathematics education co-op placement. Elementary majors must have completed at least Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers at UNI and have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. The designated faculty co-op supervisor for Mathematics Education is Dr. Diane Thiessen.
University Elective; Credit/No Credit basis.
Physics
An Applied Physics internship under 880:179 Cooperative Education should be taken during the Junior or Senior year. If it is not possible to make suitable arrangements for this, the internship may be done under 880:184 with approval of the department. Successful completion of either 880:179 or 880:184 requires both a written and an oral report. The designated faculty co-op supervisor for this department is Dr. Dale Olson. Major credit; Credit/No Credit.
