College of Humanities and Fine Arts Co-op Requirements

Unless a department states otherwise, 50 hours of work/volunteer effort with an employer generates one credit hour of academic credit.

Art

This department prefers parallel placements, but full-time placements may also be arranged, especially during the summer. Students should have 9 credit hours in their respective emphasis area as a prerequisite to the co-op experience. The faculty co-op supervisor will assign an academic project at the time of placement. The designated faculty co-op supervisor (s) for this department are: R. Behrens, R. Colburn,E. Duffy, C. Schulte, C.Streed and J. Byrd.  University Elective; Graded basis.

Communication Studies

The Department of Communication Studies offers cooperative educational experiences and internships in four areas: Communication (Liberal Arts), Electronic Media, Journalism, and Public Relations. For each credit hour earned, a student must work a minimum of 50 hours at his/her cooperative education program site. All internships require that students have (1) a 2.5 major GPA and (2) junior or senior standing.All areas need 12 hours of major work. Summer faculty advisor is subject to change each year. For specific program prerequisites and guidelines, students should contact the co-op faculty supervisor, Dr. Nicole Zumbach Johnson. Students must show Dr. Nichole Zumbach-Johnson a job description before submitting Faculty Approval Form.

A maximum of six (6) credit hours may be earned through one or more placements through co-op and/or the departmental internship program. PR student must have taken either 48J:071 or 48P:173 prior to the co-op/internship experience;  Journalism students must have taken 48J:071.  Electronic Media students must have taken 48E:003 prior to the co-op experience. Co-ops and internships are offered only for Graded credit.

Communicative Disorders

Students may work as aides with children and adults with disabilities. Designated faculty co-op supervisor for this department is Dr.Clifford L. Highnam. Major Elective; Credit/No Credit.

English & TESOL

A student may receive from one to six semester hours of credit per placement. Prerequisites for a placement are a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5, junior standing and at least one semester completed at UNI. Both the student's initial application for a co-op placement and then the job description for a specific position must be approved by both the department supervisor and the Cooperative Education office. Generally, 50 clock hours of work is required to earn one hour of academic credit. For academic credit, one or more of the following is also generally required: (a) a portfolio of work done; (b) a journal with entries discussing the co-op experience; (c) a written summary and analysis of the co-op experience. The designated faculty co-op supervisors are: English & Professional Writing - Adrienne Lamberti ; TESOL -Dr. Stephen Gaies. Major or Minor credit MUST BE graded basis. University Elective may be Ungraded (Graded credit recommended). English and English-Teaching Majors may use co-op credit for Major or University Credit. For the Professional Writing Minor, co-op credit satisfies a minor requirement. TESOL and TESOL-Teaching Majors may use co-op credit for Major or University Elective Credit.

Modern Languages

The student's selected area should be directly related to this department's programmatic activities. The student must possess a reasonable proficiency in the target language. The designated faculty co-op supervisor(s) for this department are: Maria Basom (Russian), R. Krueger (Portuguese), D. Heistad (French), Antonio Planells (Spanish), Siegrun Wildner (German).  Major Elective; Graded basis.

Music (School of)

Alternating (40 hours/week) or parallel (20 hours/week) internships are allowed. All students who choose to participate in co-op must have a SENIOR status. The designated faculty co-op supervisor for this department is Dr. John F. Vallentine. Major Elective; Graded basis.

Philosophy & Religion

Any fulltime member of the Philosophy & Religion faculty may supervise a co-op student and sign the Faculty Agreement. Like departmental independent study, all co-ops must be approved by the department head.  Faculty co-op supervisor: Jerome Soneson, Interim Department Head. Major Elective credit.  The faculty co-op supervisor will determine whether the credit will be Graded or Credit/No Credit at time of placement.

Theatre

Students should have a 2.5 or greater UNI GPA and be of a JUNIOR or SENIOR standing. Credit hours are determined on a 4:1 ratio of employment hours to credit hours. For example, if the student has a twelve-hour/week internship, she/he may earn three credit hours. A maximum of six credit hours may be earned through one or more placements.
