RE: On-Campus Funded Co-op Positions for FY 2010

The On-Campus Co-op Positions will again be funded for the 2009-2010 school year. These positions are meant to assist in staffing University departments and programs on a part-time, temporary basis and especially lend themselves to supporting projects or programs. Three examples of current positions include: Strayer-Wood Theatre Production Assistant (Theatre); Outreach Assistant (Dept. of Computer Science); Alcohol Educator (Dept. of Residence). Each position is funded for $4,050. Because the University funds these positions, the only obligation of employing departments is to provide the guidance and supervision required of any organization utilizing co-op students.

CRITERIA FOR WORK SITES:
It is very important that the quality of educational experience for these positions be strong enough to support academic credit. The work must be meaningful for the student and of sufficient scope so the student does not level off during the learning experience. Criteria include:

    • 15 hrs/week for 15 weeks both Fall and Spring semesters (same student will work each semester).
    • A responsible position where an undergraduate student must rely upon some of their major or minor coursework. Also, the position should be viewed as a growth experience, which the student can use for career preparation.
    • The position cannot be the same as one of the positions funded for the current school year (FY 2009). A department may, however, submit a proposal for a different position.
    • Candidates for these positions will be selected from among current co-op student applicants. Interested students should review the guidelines for participation in the "20 Best Internships on Campus" initiative.

Interested student should contact the Co-op/Internship Program. All eligible candidates should be given equal opportunity during interviews.

SELECTION PROCESS:
The selection committee will be made up of five members, including a faculty member, a Professional & Scientific staff member, a student, and two Career Services staff. The committee will meet shortly after the proposal deadline so that the interview and hiring process can be completed prior to the end of this semester.
