Description:

The adapted sports camp at UNI is for athletes between 2nd grade and high school with a lower limb disability. We will bring in athletes  on Wednesday afternoon at registration time, usually around 3-5 pm. We will close camp around 2:00 p.m. on Saturday after our awards dinner for the families of the athletes.

The youths that attend have a wide range of lower limb capabilities but their limitation is enough to prevent participation in mainstream sports.  They are mostly independent in activities of daily living skills and want to improve their athletic skills in many areas.  Some use a wheelchair for everyday mobility, some do not, but using a chair enables them to compete.  We use sports chairs for the different sports.

Some of the sports taught in previous camps are basketball, track and field, hand cycling, football, soccer, tennis, rock climbing, sit volleyball,  and softball. We may do archery at some of them.

We bring in coaches and volunteers with a wide range of abilities and adapted sports experience. Some have had experience with  paralympic events. Many are mentors for the athletes and have provided a great example of what our camp can do for improving their level of independence and self esteem, and sports experiences outside of camp.

Additional Comments:
Our volunteers and coaches get a unique, hands on, experience with the athletes and using the equipment to participate in the activities with everyone at camp. This is a great way to have fun and gain awareness of what it takes to play adapted sports.
