Text: The Weather Makers (2005 with 2006 update), by Tim Flannery, Publisher: Grove Press.

This book by an Australian author, has the following features

• international perspective (gets us out of US politics, but in a similar country)
• comprehensive coverage of history of the subject
• explanations of the basic principles and concepts
• readable (serious popular book, not textbook)
• makes the full impact of global warming clear
• full of information
• cheap!
• action-oriented, not just doom & gloom
• science is pretty much correct
• limitations: not absolutely up to date (will supplement with the latest)

We will read chapters from the book each night, and answer questions mostly based on the reading.

Assignments from the book (and some outside sources)

• these are due daily (which is equivalent to every week and a half during the regular semester)
• the chapters to be read are given in the assignments below
• download the assignments from this page
• answer the questions given using information from the book (mostly) or other cited sources
• sometimes only a number or a few words are necessary, while at other times you might need a few sentences
• quality counts, and we should not see spelling and basic grammar errors in college students' writing
• grading follows the same +, check, - system given on the grade page

A few items required a quick Google search outside the book (such as current oil prices), but almost all of the answers are to be found in the book. The questions are in order, which should make it easy to find the answers. The answers should be in your own words—the object here is to tell us what you know now, not what the author knew when he wrote the book.

The questions should be downloaded from the website and the answers entered in below each question (no extra blanks are required). Otherwise a lot of people drift off track and fail to answer part of the question or answer a question that was not asked. If a question starts with Why or How or When, be especially careful you address these words, rather than just writing something you learned about the general topic. If you aren’t doing this on a computer, you should write neatly enough that it is as easy to read as a printed work.

Put your name and the date at the top. Save some trees and change the margins to .5” all the way around. There’s still room for a staple. Each day’s assignment must be a separate unit and should be handed in separately—no running three together.
