Assignments

There are several types of assigment in this course, including

General

Assignments are due on the due date (that's why we call it that). Excused absences or a presentation lets you turn them in one day late without penalty. There is a penalty for missing a class (unexcused), but if you turn in the assignment the next day, you will not be penalized further. Any other late assigments will have a reduced grade (see below).

Grading for assignments (except small ones from in class) runs as follows: An ordinary, pretty complete job gets a check, which is a B (85 points when it comes to calculating final grades). If you do a really good job, with better explanations showing your own understanding of the material, and your work is more complete, you get a +, which counts as an A (95). On the other hand, if your work is minimal and has gaps, you get a ─, a C (75). Zero points for a missing assignment, and you could get less than a C if you did a really shoddy job.

If you have a presentation or an excused absence on a day when there is a reading assignment due, you can turn it in the next class day. If you miss a class, you can turn in the assignment the following class day without losing any points beyond those for attendance and participation. Otherwise, an assignment one day late will bump you down one score (from check to ─, for instance). An assignment two days late will bump you down two scores (from + to ─, for instance). Assignments will not be accepted more than two days late.

Assignment: Responses to questions on the reading

Details on reading assignments are given on the Text page.

Assignment: Presentations

Details on presentations are given on the Presentations page.

Assignment: Papers on presentation topics
(2 of these)

Each person will write a paper 2 pages long (12 point text, 1" margins or narrower, single spaced with double spaces between paragraphs), with the references at the end (separate page is OK). The references do not count as part of the 2 pages. Any normal format will do, just be consistent. Spelling and grammar should be at university level. The topic will be the same as your presentation, so you will not have to do extra research. Most people will put information in the paper that they did not fit into the presentation, but the images and videos will not be in the paper, so there is lots of room. The work is individual, and will be different from that of your partner(s). The topic is the same as the topic of the presentation (not just your contribution), but you can focus on one aspect that caught your attention. The paper should concentrate on factual information, but a small amount of opinion (labeled as such) at the end is fine.

For Week 2 presentations, the paper is due on the following Monday. For Week 3 presentations, the paper is due on the final day of class...but you can turn it in on Friday if you have a presentation on Thursday. Your normally due questions from the reading are due the day following your presentation (which will mean that you have two due that day).

Assignment: Reflection paper

Due on last day--One page (format given above) reflecting on your learning and experience in this class. What did you know at the start? What did you find out? How does this affect your own views of the topic? How will it affect your actions, and what you tell others. (People who have presentations on the last day can turn this in on Friday.)
