Hebrew in its modern form is spoken by more than seven million people in Israel while Classical Hebrew has been used for prayer or study in Jewish communities around the world for over two thousand years. It is one of the official languages of Israel, along with Arabic.
Jerusalem
Hebrew is a member of the Canaanite group of Semitic languages. It was the language of the early Jews,
but from 586 BC it started to be replaced by Aramaic. By 70 AD use of Hebrew as an everyday language had
largely ceased, but it continued to be used for literary and religious functions, as well as a
lingua franca among Jews from different countries.
Israel borders Lebanon in the north, Syria in the northeast, Jordan in the east, and Egypt on the southwest,
and contains geographically diverse features within its relatively small area. Also adjacent are the West Bank to the east and Gaza Strip to the southwest. Israel is the world's only predominantly Jewish state with a population of about 7.4 million people, of whom approximately 5.62 million are Jewish.
