Graduate Athletic Training Program

 

Mission Statement

The Athletic Training Education Program at the University of Northern Iowa offers a Master of Science degree in Athletic Training. The mission of the program is to fuse the didactic, clinical and scholarly components of graduate education to assure that students who graduate from UNI can make significant contributions to the profession of athletic training.

 

 

Graduate Athletic Training Program Accreditation Status

The University of Northern Iowa’s Graduate Athletic Training Education Program will be seeking NATA accreditation for the Masters of Science degree.

 

Graduate Applicant Requirements

Those interested in seeking admittance into the Athletic Training Masters of Science Degree Program at the University of Northern Iowa must meet the following requirements:

  1. Applicants must be NATABOC certified or eligible.
  2. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75.
  3. Must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  4. An official transcript from the college or university granting the baccalaureate degree (if other than UNI)
  5. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required for admittance.
  6. Applicants are strongly recommended to be Hepatitis B vaccinated.
  7. Applicants must complete applications for both the Athletic Training Program and Graduate School.

Graduate Application Procedures (Athletic Training)

Submit the following materials to Dr. Richard "Biff" Williams by February 16:
  1. Letter of Intent stating your desire to enter our graduate level program, career goals, and the attributes you possess that will make you successful in life and in our program.
  2. Curriculum Vita/Resume
  3. One official transcript from each college and/or university attended.
  4. Three letters of recommendation
  5. Athletic Training Graduate Program Application.

Graduate Application Procedures (UNI Graduate School)

Applicant Requirements:
  1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. An official transcript from the college/university granting the baccalaureate degree (if other than the University of Northern Iowa).
  3. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required for admittance.
Application Process:

The graduate admission process begins when a completed application for admission is received by the University of Northern Iowa. State specifically the type of admission for which you wish to be considered.

  1. Degree status should be selected by students who are seeking admission to a department to pursue a program of studies which can culminate in a degree.
  2. Non-Degree Status has been established to meet the needs of students who: wish to take courses which do not comprise a degree program plan to demonstrate competence in graduate studies in support of consideration for admission to a degree program at a later time. NOTE: Academic departments are not obliged to count toward their degree programs any credit for course work undertaken in a non-degree status. If a department decides to accept such credit no more than 12 semester hours may be counted towards a degree program.
Application Fee:

An application fee of $30.00 must be sent to the Office of the Registrar unless you received your undergraduate degree from the University of Northern Iowa.

Graduate Assistantships:

To be eligible for an assistantship stipend or graduate tuition scholarship, a student must be admitted to a graduate degree program, should have a minimum grade point average of 3.00 in his/her undergraduate studies and/or a minimum grade point average of 3.00 in at least eight hours of graduate credit. Graduate assistantship/tuition scholarship forms may be requested from the appropriate academic department.

 

Deadlines:

To ensure consideration of an application for admission to a degree program the application and all supporting documents must be on file at least 30 days prior to the beginning of the term of entrance. Those applying for admission to the MBA program must have everything on file at least 60 days before the term of entrance. Application for non-degree status will be accepted up to five days prior to registration. Mail the application to the department in which you wish to earn a degree, University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, 50614.Those requesting admission to non-degree status should send the application to the Office of the Registrar.

Clinical Experiences

The University of Northern Iowa has a variety of clinical experiences for graduate students (subject to availability). These experiences are designed to provide athletic training graduate students the opportunity to develop decision making and clinical skills under the tutelage of staff and faculty. These clinical experiences are combined with an extensive didactic experience to prepare graduate students for a competitive job market in a variety of settings.

There are a number of on campus clinical experiences that include working directly with UNI Athletics.

Off-Campus Clinical Experiences

The off-campus experiences include a variety of settings. These include high schools, clinics and youth sports organizations.
