Undergraduate Research Opportunities

Introduction

The University of Northern Iowa promotes undergraduate participation in research and scholarly activities. Students have the opportunity to serve as research assistant investigators under the tutelage of UNI faculty members. Student involvement has included the formation of the research question, design, data collection, preparation of case studies, and the review of current athletic training literature. UNI Athletic Training Students have presented their projects at the annual conferences of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and the Mid American Athletic Trainers’ Association. Financial support for these endeavors has been provided by the Department of HPELS and the UNI Student Athletic Training Organization.

Although participation in research is not required to graduate, many athletic training students find that assisting faculty with research projects is a rewarding experience. These experiences provide UNI ATEP students with invaluable skills that are highly sought after by, employers, graduate schools, and medical colleges.

Student Testimonial

"Conducting research has been a very positive experience for me!" " I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to present at the MAATA conference, which also led me to be part of a presentation at the NATA annual meeting." Both of these experiences, in addition to others, did wonders for my confidence and provided significant knowledge about conducting research for graduate school."

--Tricia Haak, ATC, LAT Graduate Assistant-University of Northern Iowa
