October 2006 Athletic Training Student of the Month

Whitney Harris

3rdd Year Athletic Training Student

Hometown: Waterloo, IA

High School: Columbus High School

Why did you choose the Athletic Training Education Program at UNI?

I chose the UNI athletic training education program because I wanted to gain knowledge of the human body, pertaining to athletes and the physically active. Also I enjoy participating in athletic events through the athletes that I work with.

Have there been any healthcare professionals who have mentored or inspired you?

Yes, Lynn Wheeler the certified athletic trainer at my high school helped me get involved in athletic training. My senior year of high school I helped out in the training room after school.

What field experiences have you enjoyed the most and found the most rewarding?

My rotation at Waterloo East High School has been one of my most rewarding and educational experiences. I get a lot of hands on experience and I really enjoy the athletes and coaches.

Any advice or tips for incoming students or other interested persons?

Don’t be afraid to be yourself. As a student, do what you do best, if you are a good leader, be a leader, if you are a good writer use that to better yourself and the program. Don’t be intimidated by your surroundings, get in there and make a difference!

What are future plans after UNI?

I am going to attend graduate school next fall for a master’s degree in Sport Administration.
