Soo Hostetler
Associate Professor of Art

Soo Hostetler is an associate professor in graphic design. She received her MFA in Graphic Design at Iowa State University in Ames, and MA in Graphic Design at University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls IA. Her areas of expertise include interface design and time-based design such as kinetic typography and motion graphics. Before joining the UNI faculty, she worked for several years at a prominent publishing company where she designed a diverse range of publications for corporate clients. She was appointed an associate editor for the International Journal of Design Principles & Practices, and a manuscript referee for Leonardo: Journal of the International Society of Art, Sciences and Technology (MIT Press). 

Her research about various aspects of digital media has been presented in papers, in national and international conferences and journals at the national UCDA (University and College Designers Association) Design Education Conference; FATE (Foundations in Art: Theory & Education) Conference; AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts) Education Conference; Design Principles & Practices International Conference; IDMA (International Digital Media and Arts) International Conference; Korean Society of Basic Design & Art and UNLV International Conference; International Conference on Camouflage: Art, Science and Popular Culture; Hawaii International Conference, and others. 

Her designs have been presented at numerous exhibitions such as the International Digital Media and Arts Exhibition; Flash Animation and Motion Graphics Festival; Arizona Digital Media Investigations Exhibition; Korean Society of Basic Design & Art International Exhibition; International Exchange Korea Design Center Exhibition; Manifest Sound and Moving Image Show; 30 and Beyond: College of Design Alumni Exhibition at Iowa State University; and Emotion: Design for the Humanities at St. Cloud State University, and others. One of her motion graphics works was selected as one of the best of the year at the Flash Animation and Motion Graphics Festival, while others have been chosen for the American Design Awards and were featured in Graphic Design USA magazine in 2006 and 2008. 

In recent years, Professor Hostetler‘s scholarly work has emphasized motion graphics, kinetic typography and interdisciplinary research that integrates motion, music, mathematical proportion, and Gestalt theory, using digital technology. She has taught courses in a wide range of areas of graphic design, including identity systems design, motion graphics, kinetic typography, web and interactive design, typography and packaging design.
