George Longfish - A Retrospective

Internationally known artist George Longfish, who is of Seneca and Tuscarora descent, is best known for his vibrant abstract paintings about identity, spirituality and justice. In 2004, he was one of 12 featured artists at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian.

Spanning 35 years of work, the retrospective honors these accomplishments with 35 original pieces in a variety of media, four of which will be added to the UNI Permanent Art Collection at the conclusion of the exhibition's tour to Montana, South Dakota and Texas. The works to be donated include a mixed-media work titled "Bag a Red Heart for Valentine's Day," one large-scale painting titled "I Wanna Dance with the Rosebud Sioux This Summer" (see image below), and two medium-sized paintings, "Untitled" and "3,000 Miles."

Norman Jones of Davis, Calif., has loaned these four works to the organizers of the traveling exhibition, and they will ultimately be donated to UNI. Jones and his late wife Lois, a UNI alumna, have been long-time supporters of UNI.
