frje echeverria
Emeritus Professor of Art
drawing and painting

frje echeverria teaches drawing and painting, workshops in mixed media, and individual tutorials in experimental writing and music. He is interested in how creativity happens and how it can be encouraged. Most of his own work in painting and drawing is done from life: landscape, cityscape, figure, still life, interior, all with a lively freedom of touch and form. His work in classical guitar and writing is more exacting. His sense of both the open and the constraining aspects of work give him special insights into the creative process.

He has a BA from Florida Presbyterian College (now called Eckerd College) and an MFA from the University of Arkansas. He started teaching at UNI in 1969.

His work is in many private and public collections, including West Publishing Company, Austin Peay State University, North Dakota State University, Eckerd College, and the University of Northern Iowa.

He retired from teaching in 2007.

“An important gift to receive from creative work is what we didn't know it to be when we were making it; our making is always ahead of our knowing.”
