Robert Abbott (BA ’85) is senior partner and CEO of Shift Global, an international advertising design firm. He came back to UNI in October 2007 as an alumni guest speaker.

John Abrahamsen (BFA ‘91) is a furniture designer and craftsman in West Windsor VT, where he owns and operates his own woodworking company.
Yasmin Almonte Lantz (MA ‘96) teaches painting in the College of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines.
Matt Anderegg (BA ’07) is a graphic designer at MetaCommunications in Iowa City.

Bob (BA ‘68) and Connie Andersen have for many years operated their own studio pottery called Sunflower Pottery in Pella IA.
Erin Anfinson (BA ‘01) teaches at Middle State Tennessee University in Murfreesburo.
Kurt Asa (BA ‘06) is senior graphic designer at Barmuda Corporation in Cedar Falls.

Amy (Backer) Lamp (BA ‘77) is a graphic designer at Switch Studio in Tempe AZ.

Brittany (Bagge) Williamson (BA ‘01) later earned an MA in Art Education and teaches at the high school in Hallsville MO.

Li-Ying Bao (MA ‘92), who teaches graphic design at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, recently organized an international conference on Cross-Cultural Design.
After working for several years as a book designer in San Francisco, Jensen Barnes (BFA) is now in graduate school at Yale University, working on an MFA in graphic design.

Charles Adelman In addition to teaching art history courses in Egyptian and Ancient Roman Art, he has been offering courses in Myth and Narrative Art, and 19th Century Art, contributing to the university’s honors program, and working with graduate students. More…

Roy R. Behrens His current research is focused on writing, and on book and web design. Recent accomplishments include ten articles for Oxford University’s Oxford Art Online, articles on “Camouflage” and the “Ames Demonstrations” for the Encyclopedia of Perception, a commemorative booklet and website for psychologist Rudolf Arnheim, the foreword for a book about Chinese paper-cutting, an essay on art and camouflage for a Cambridge University zoology journal, and the design of a major book on Bauhaus ceramics, titled Marguerite Wildenhain and the Bauhaus: An Eyewitness Anthology. Among other projects, he is working on a large new book titled Camoupedia: A Compendium of Research on Art, Architecture and Camouflage, and will appear soon in a new documentary film titled Invisible: Abbott Thayer and the Art of Camouflage, which will premiere on October 2, 2008, at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Jeffery Byrd While working tirelessly as Head of the UNI Department of Art, he has also been able to travel internationally in connection with his efforts in the area of performance art. Most recently, he gave performances in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in Mannheim, Germany, and in Bern, Switzerland. He was a guest lecturer at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and was featured in exhibitions at Vanderbilt University and at ArtXposium in Chicago. He has an on-going appointment at the Centre for Time Based Art in the Cardiff School of Art and Design in Wales. More…

Richard Colburn Coincident with the presidential caucuses in Iowa, he received a grant in support of a major photographic series titled “Look ‘Em in the Eye: The Iowa Caucus Project,” in which he photographed various political candidates in interaction with the public. His work has been recently featured in a number of exhibitions, at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon, Catich Gallery at St. Ambrose University, the Silver Eye Center for Photography in Pittsburgh, and at Review Santa Fe. His photographs from a visit to Russia were featured at the UNI Gallery of Art, as was an exhibition he curated, titled World Views: Photographs of Tina Barney, Linda Connor, Andrew Moore and JoAnn Verburg. Tim Dooley and Aaron Wilson Working collaboratively, they lectured in Chicago at the Columbus College of Art and Design in connection with their sessions as artists-in-residence, and were interviewed in an article in that school’s Anchor Graphics Newsletter. They were among 100 participants in an international printmaking project called Moving Targets, in which they printed banners that were first installed on trains, then exhibited at two galleries in Argentina. Together, they were visiting artists at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville GA, and were exhibitors and participants at the Southern Graphics Council Conference at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. In addition, Aaron Wilson’s work (More…) was also chosen for a juried exhibition at the International Print Center in New York, while Tim Dooley’s (More…) was featured at the Kirkland Arts Center in Kirkland, Washington, and in a traveling portfolio at the Estonian National Museum of Art in Tallinn, Estonia.

Erica Duffy She was one of a small group of artists selected for inclusion in Iowa Artists 2008: Drawing, at the Des Moines Art Center. Her work was also featured in a number of group invitational, solo and competitive shows, among them Distinctions in Drawing at 1078 Gallery in Chico, California; Acceptably Fluent at Edinboro University in Pennsylvania; Phenomen(l) at Spaces Gallery in Cleveland; and the Annual Juried Exhibition at the Korean Cultural Center in Los Angeles. She also lectured at the Des Moines Art Center and Edinboro University. More…

Phil Fass He recently participated in two design-related workshops, both at the University of Iowa Center for the Book. One was “Boxmaking Made Hard,” which was taught by Jody Williams; the other was “The Magic Box,” taught by Emily Martin. He was also a presenter at Cross-Cultural Perspectives in Visual Communication” t the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, where he lectured on Ikebana and Typography. He is in process of completing the design of a book titled Cloud Cuckoo Land for the Association for Textual Study and Production, of which he is also a member of the editorial board. More…

Soo Hostetler She continues to participate in conferences related to design, typography and motion graphics. She was invited to present her work at the University of Miami at an International Conference on Design Principles and Practice, where she talked about Hearing Type and Seeing Music: Multisensory Harmonies in Digital Communication. At the annual education conference of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), she spoke on Proportional Harmony: Kinetic Typography and the Music of Mozart. One of her motion graphics works was selected as among the year’s best at the Flash Animation and Motion Graphics Festival. She was chosen to be an associate editor for the International Journal of Design Principles & Practice, and and a manuscript referee for Leonardo: Journal of the International Society of Arts, Sciences and Technology (MIT Press). In the fall of 2008 (September 5-October 4), her work will be included in a group exhibition titled Arizona Digital Media Investigations at the School of Communication Gallery at Northern Arizona University. Mary Frisbee Johnson While teaching in the areas of drawing and professional practices (in which students are advised on how to work effectively within society), she has also been exhibiting her metal innovations in various galleries, among the Velvet da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco, Gallery IO in New Orleans, Artisan’s Gallery in New York, and Gallery MIM (Made in Metal) in Baltimore. She was chosen for a solo exhibit at the Appalachian Center for Crafts at Tennessee State University, and participated in a group exhibition of the Iowa Metals Guild at the Russian State Pedagogical University in St. Petersburg. Dan Perry He joined the department in 2007 as Shop Technician, as well as an instructor. Most recently, his work was exhibited in 77 Deadly Sins + Heavenly Virtues at the 1301 Gallery in Omaha NE. He was also chosen for the Barker Art Residency, which led to exhibitions at the Nicholas Street Gallery, and the Hot Shops Art Center in Omaha. He was part of a duo exhibition at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Art Center in Nebraska City NE, and had his work selected for an international juried exhibition at the Dangenart Gallery in Nashville TN.  

JoAnn Schnabel One of her pieces was installed as a ceramic title mural at the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts. She was also featured in a group invitational exhibit called Unadorned at Santa Fe Clay in New Mexico. She was recently a juror for the College Hill Arts Festival in Cedar Falls. More…

Tom Stancliffe He is intensively involved in the development of (and in coursework that pertains to) public sculpture. His large-scale outdoor sculptures, titled To Wing, were installed at the Eastern Iowa Airport, near Cedar Rapids. He also finished and installed an outdoor public sculpture, titled Gyre, at the Wisconsin Department of Revenue Building, in Madison. During a visit to Russia, he lectured on Beyond the Apprenticeship: Craft and the Visual Arts in Higher Education. More…

Crit Streed She has had an active year in terms of exhibitions. She was one of a few select artists who were chosen for the juried show, Iowa Artists 2008: Drawing, at the Des Moines Art Center. Her work was also included in a group exhibition of nine artists who explore abstraction, titled Compass: New Directions, at the Black and White Gallery in Brooklyn NY. In affiliation with A.I.R. Gallery in New York, she was also represented in Structured Incidents at that gallery, and in Women in Art NYC History in the Puck Building in New York. More… 

Darrell Taylor As gallery director, he has been instrumental in acquiring and installing recently featured exhibitions, among them Echoes and Apparitions: Works by Scott Robert Hudson; Dean and Gunnar Schwarz: Pottery, Form and Inherent Expression; New Polyphonies: Contemporary Art from Portugal; and World Views: Photographs of Tina Barney, Linda Connor, Andrew Moore and JoAnn Verburg. He was the host and moderator for a two-part program on Art, Ecology and Sustainable Culture, and also served as juror for competitive exhibitions at Grinnell College, Hawkeye Community College, and the Waterloo Art Museum.

Bryan VanDonslear While serving as the curator of the department’s Visual Resource Center (as well as an instructor), he has devoted considerable time to building up his expertise in computer-based resources for educational research and teaching. In addition to taking short courses in digital media and methods, he participated in the national conference of the Visual Resources Association, where he gathered information on digital images, cataloging, databases and copyright law. His drawings were exhibited at Wartburg College in Waverly IA, and Blackburn College in Carlinville IL.
