AT THE moment, one of our former students is a senior producer for National Public Radio. Another is an internationally known illustrator. Other alumni are leaders in art and design education (one is on the advisory board for the Journal of Aesthetic Education, another is a contributing editor of Print magazine), university professors (at schools throughout the country, among them the Rhode Island School of Design, Vanderbilt University, Tyler School of Art, and the University of Wisconsin), authors of books and articles, exhibiting artists (in galleries in New York and elsewhere), art historians, art teachers, exhibition designers, arts administrators, graphic designers, animators, web designers, performance artists, ceramic artists (who earn their living as such), art directors, business CEOs, and so on. The UNI art department and faculty prepared me for life outside of the university by providing a realistic balance of support and criticism. Whatever subjects I studied, whether design or painting, I was always made to feel that my own ideas mattered, because of the advice and encouragement from the art faculty.

A Japanese friend of mine who was an Aikido Master had quit his dojo. I asked him if he missed practicing Aikido. He replied, "Aikido is not something you stop doing. I'm doing Aikido right now as I sit here. It is a part of everything I do." I feel the same way with regard to my visual training in photography, drawing, art history and design at UNI. I am always practicing art because it has fundamentally changed the way I perceive the world around me.

When I came to UNI from Greece, I expected to get a solid undergraduate education and then go back to Cyprus. Now, only a few years later, I am doing very well at a great job in New York. I am grateful to UNI, especially to the Art Department, for giving me the basic tools with which to succeed.

For me, UNI was a place where a long-time interest in art became a passion. Working with faculty and other students who wanted to make art and design their lives was tremendously influential.

My instructors at UNI encouraged me to take risks and develop my own artistic voice. They created a stimulating environment that was crucial for my creative growth. I still benefit from what I learned under their guidance.
