Advising Notes

Declaration of Major: Student should indicate their interest in the B.A. Leisure, Youth and Human Services by completing an application to the division.  Leisure, Youth and Human Services application materials may be obtained in the division office (WRC 203).  A student may declare a prospective major via the Declaration of Curriculum form.  Upon satisfaction of the acceptance requirements (1-3 below), the student shall be converted to major status by the division.
 
Admission to Major Requirements: The following criteria shall be used to determine acceptance as a fully declared major in the program:
1. 2.00 or above cumulative UNI GPA;
2. 2.50 or above GPA in a minimum of 9 hours of course work in the Division (must include 430:010, 430:020, and any other 430:xxx course for which the student is eligible);
3. A grade or C (2.00) or higher in all courses applied to the major. If the student earns less than a C in a major course, s(he) must retake the course within two semesters in order to apply it to the major.
 
Cumulative Major GPA of 2.50 or above must be maintained in order to remain in good academic standing.  Students whose GPAs fall below 2.50 will have one semester in which to raise grades to the required level.  If they are unable to do so, they must retake the course or courses that caused the GPA to fall below 2.50, and they will be administratively dropped from any other major courses for which they have registered.

Computer Competency:  After full admission to the major, students must demonstrate computer competency through taking two technology seminars as offered by the UNI Educational Techonology Department.

An approved Program of Study: must be filed, including all electives to be taken for the major, within one semester after full admission to the major.

Internship/Graduation Qualifications: For internship or graduation, a student must:
1. Meet the academic criteria above (under Cumulative Major GPA);
2. Complete a minimum of 500 Professional Experience hours in Leisure, Youth and Human Service settings.
3. Hold or obtain current certification in American Red Cross CPR PRO (Professional Rescuer) American Red Cross AED (Automatic External Defibrillation), American Red Cross First Aid, American Red Cross PDT (Prevention of Disease Transmission),and Child/Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training.
