Admissions: Transfer Students Academic Preparation
Academic Department Recommendations:
College of Social and Behavioral Sciences
Design, Family and Consumer Sciences
Most programs require careful coordination because of course sequencing. Interior Design majors are encouraged to transfer to UNI after one year. A 2.4 cumulative grade point average is required for admission to the Family Service major.
Geography
Suggested work includes the equivalent of such courses as Human Geography, World Geography, Physical Geography, Quantitative Methods in Spatial Analysis, Introduction to Cartography, and Regional Geography. Early consultation with the head of the department is encouraged.
History
Important courses to complete before transferring include equivalents to UNI survey courses in Western civilization (European history) and United States history. A minor in economics, geography, political science or sociology is recommended as a complement to a history major. Work in a minor field should also begin before you transfer. Questions should be directed to the UNI Admissions Office.
Political Science
Transfer students interested in political science should take a standard course in American government, as well as a course in Macro-Economics and an introductory course in sociology. A student declaring a major in Public Administration will be required to have sophomore standing and a minimum 2.50 cumulative grade point average.
Psychology
Introduction to Psychology is the prerequisite for all other study in the discipline and should be taken before transferring. It is advisable for
transferring juniors to have completed a course in the history and systems of psychology. Once these foundation courses are taken you may choose from
course offerings in clinical psychology, behavior modification and industrial psychology. Entrance to this major requires a 2.5 cumulative grade point
average and nine hours of psychology courses.
Both teaching and non-teaching psychology majors have a common requirement of courses totaling 14 credit hours. Psychological Statistics and Research
Methods are the methodological core of both majors and should be taken as soon as possible after transferring.
Sociology and Anthropology
Culture, Nature and Society, and Human Origins are the basic courses in anthropology. Principles of Sociology and Social Problems serve as the basic courses for the sociology and sociology-teaching majors as well as for criminology. Transfer students are encouraged to take Liberal Arts Core courses and courses in the social sciences before transferring.
Social Science
While there is no "Social Science Department" as such, a social science-teaching major is available. Under this program, you may be approved to teach in
three social science disciplines. This major is offered cooperatively by the Departments of Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Psychology,
Sociology, Anthropology & Criminology, and is supervised by the Social Science Education Committee.
Under this program, three areas of study in social science disciplines are required, with a minimum of 21 credit hours in two of the areas and a minimum
of 18 credit hours in the third area
Social Work
Students should contact the department head as early as possible in their college program for transfer course advisement. Introductory courses in psychology, sociology, human biology and college-level mathematics, such as Introduction to Statistical Methods, should be completed. Transfer students with two years of credit should be able to complete the requirements for the degree in an additional two years. A 2.2 cumulative grade point average is required for admission to the Social Work major.
