Admissions: Transfer Students Academic Preparation

Academic Department Recommendations:
College of Education

Application to Teacher Education

A grade point average of 2.50 or better is required for admission to teacher education programs. All teaching majors should include both life and physical science courses in their Liberal Arts Core. An Application for Admission to Teacher Education will be sent to transfer students with their transfer evaluation materials.

All teaching majors are required to take a speech and hearing test. Information regarding this can be obtained by visiting the College of Education web site or by calling the College of Education Advising Center at 319-273-2751.

You will be required to complete the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST). UNI recommends you take this test at a testing center, with a score report sent to UNI. Registration booklets are available from the Academic Advising Office or the College of Education Advising Center.

Curriculum and Instruction
(Elementary or Early Childhood Education)

Students who expect to transfer from other institutions should plan to include at least one course from as many of the following subject areas in general education as possible: American history or government, art, English, geography, music, science, and speech. We also encourage you to include an initial field experience and a course in human growth and development, and educational psychology. It is recommended that transfer students from community colleges complete the Associate of Arts degree.

The special education and the reading education emphases of the elementary education major are difficult to complete in four semesters due to the sequence of courses and specific prerequisites.

School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services (HPELS)

Health education majors should select such courses as basic health, biology, psychology, and sociology. First aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, personal health, basic nutrition, anatomy and physiology, and mental health courses will also apply toward major requirements. Leisure services majors should take the equivalent of Introduction to Leisure Services and Leadership in Leisure Services. If possible, take an early practical experience in recreation and courses in general psychology, sociology, and communication skills. You may also select basic survey courses in recreation and courses that will develop general sports skills and skills in the fine arts. Physical education majors should enroll in fundamental physical activity classes, such as aquatics, combatives, dance, individual and/or dual sports, self-testing activities and team sports during their first two years. If you transfer as a junior, you should plan on a minimum of five semesters to complete the major.

Special Education

At the Undergraduate level, the Department of Special Education students may major in Early Childhood, Elementary or Secondary Education and minor in Instructional Strategist I: Mild/Moderate K-6 or 7-12, Instructional Strategist II: Mental Disabilities, K-12, Early Childhood Special Education, or Visual Impairments.
