Admissions: Transfer Students Academic Preparation

Academic Department Recommendations:
College of Natural Sciences

General Biology I and II and General Chemistry I and II are the introductory courses and are prerequisites for all of the major courses. Students with no previous courses in biology should start these sequences immediately. Any student with questions regarding previous biological coursework should consult with a departmental advisor or the department head.

Students transferring to Northern Iowa for the junior year should have completed four semesters of chemistry. Courses beyond general chemistry might include two semesters of organic chemistry or one semester each of organic chemistry and quantitative analysis. Any organic chemistry completed should be part of a two-semester sequence. A year of general physics is desirable, as are mathematics courses through calculus.

If you have not completed one or more years of chemistry prior to transferring, you should begin the chemistry sequence immediately. Early contact with a departmental advisor or the department head is recommended.

Computer Science

Computer science majors should complete one year of calculus before transferring, along with any available computer courses. Computer information systems majors need not take calculus, but should complete pre-calculus, statistics, and linear algebra, along with any available computer courses.

Earth Science

Two semesters of chemistry and two semesters of physics are recommended for students transferring to Northern Iowa to begin their junior year. You should complete math courses through the level of college algebra and elementary analysis. If you are specifically interested in geology, your mathematics sequence should include Calculus I.

Industrial Technology

Your transfer program should include basic courses in mathematics, physics and chemistry. Beginning courses in communications, power, and production will also apply toward basic requirements of the degree program in industrial technology. If you transfer into the Bachelor of Science or degree program, you should have completed 12 hours of mathematics, 4 hours in chemistry and 8 hours in physics.

Students transferring from a vocational-technical program in a community college should contact the Department of Industrial Technology for more specific information on transfer policies and procedures concerning credit.

Mathematics

You should complete at least the calculus sequence by the end of your second year. A course in computer programming is also recommended.

You should have at least one year of physics prior to transferring. That year should be calculus-based for students who are preparing for industrial work, graduate study in physics or engineering, a general science interest or teaching. A course in computer programming and one year of chemistry, or in some cases another science, is also recommended.

Science and Science Education

Science education majors provide the depth and breadth necessary for teaching general science in junior and senior high school. The liberal arts programs are designed to meet the special needs of students who want an interdisciplinary program. Such a major is an appropriate pre-professional background for medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, and medical technology.

Science education majors include course work in biology, chemistry, earth science, mathematics, and physics. The science major requires some work in two science disciplines, with a large component of science electives.
