Why did you choose UNI?

I was attracted to the size of the campus and the excellence of the music school. More than any other place I applied, UNI seemed really want me to come. Turns out, it was a great fit!

What's the best thing about UNI?

The really motivated and enthusiastic students, staff and faculty who are working their very hardest to make a difference in their world. I am inspired by the people I work with, and I'm continually impressed and proud of what my friends here can accomplish.

What do you like best about the School of Music?

The support that I receive from CHFA and SOM in my musical endeavors has been outstanding. Recently, CHFA collaborated with the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center to bring the renowned Boston Brass to campus. There was a contest among UNI students to compose a fanfare for the group, and my entry was the winner! I can't thank my college enough for the opportunity to hear my work performed by one of the top brass quintets in the nation!

What surprised you the most about UNI?

How supportive the staff and faculty are. My professors are always challenging me, and that's because they are truly interested and invested in my learning. The staff at UNI are outstandingly friendly and helpful. Just go to Gilchrist, and you'll see that UNI boasts some outstanding student services.

What kind of on-campus organizations/activities are you involved in? How does that involvement enrich your overall college experience?

I have been most involved by playing in ensembles and organizing both music and residence hall events. Some of the events I have helped to organize are the American Composers Concert, School of Music Picnic and Grocery Bingo in Campbell Hall. I also play the bells in the Campanile on occasion.

How has your academic experience been? Tell us about any great classes or professors that inspired or challenged you. Are you happy with your major choice?

No matter where I finally end up in life, I can't regret being a music major. Sure, it's about the most time-consuming major on campus, but through the nearly one hundred concerts I have performed in and countless more soul-shaping musical experiences, I have gained invaluable life skills that can help me to succeed in all areas of life.

What's your favorite place on campus and why?

I really like the vibrant atmosphere of the Union. The constant flurry of activity just becomes white noise that surrounds and stimulates me. It's one of my favorite places to study or just grab a coffee with friends and converse.

What advice would you give high school students getting ready for college?

Among the many conflicting emotions you may be experiencing right now, you are probably scared to leave the group of friends and people that you love. Just know that the life you will build at UNI will give you new friends, new challenges, new fulfillment that you haven't yet dreamed of, if you play your cards right. For me, college has been a downright thrilling experience. High school is great, but college is way, way better.

Years from now, what will you remember most about UNI?

The wonderful friends I have made.
