Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is a seven day holiday that honors African American people and their past. Dr. Maulana Karenga started the holiday, and named it Kwanzaa, which means "first fruits of the harvest." Kwanzaa is a time to celebrate the customs of African American and bring family and friends together to share food and exchange presents. The seven principles of Kwanzaa explain why Kwanzaa takes place and why it has so much meaning for African American people.
The Seven Principles:

  • Principle One: UMOJA - Unity
  • Principle Two: KUJICHAGULIA - Self-Determination
  • Principle Three: UJIMA - Collective Work & Responsibility
  • Principle Four: UJAMAA - Cooperative Economics
  • Principle Five: NIA - Purpose
  • Principle Six: KUUMBA - Creativity
  • Principle Seven: IMANI - Faith
