Bennie Moore Retired from Rath Packing Company in Waterloo, Iowa Bennie Moore was born in a small town called Miami in southern Iowa. Miami no longer exists. It was located near Buxton. Buxton was a major coal-mining town that had a significant African-American population. The coal-mines in Buxton dried-out and Moore’s family relocated to Waterloo, Iowa. Moore’s story is about growing up poor in Waterloo. As an adult, he was drafted into the military where he experienced racism. After serving his time, he returned to Waterloo and worked for 23 years at Rath Packing Company, one of the largest factories in the city. Soon after retirement, the plant closed. Like other employees of Rath, Mr. Moore shared the financial hardships that went with the plant closing.
