Richard Utz is a Professor of Early English Literature and Language in the University of Northern Iowa's Department of English Language and Literature. He was educated at the University of Regensburg (Germany) and Williams College (USA), specializing in early English and German literatures and languages. His scholarship centers on medieval studies, medievalism, the history of English studies as a discipline, the interdisciplinary study of late medieval philosophy, theology, and literature, and the formation of cultural memories and identities. Utz is the author or (co)editor of more than a dozen book-length publications, including, most recently: Falling into Medievalism (2006); Speculum Sermonis: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Medieval Sermon (2005); Postmodern Medievalisms (2005); Homo Narrans: Texts and Essays in Honour of Jerome Klinkowitz (2004); and Chaucer and the Discourse of German Philology (2002). His professional activities include the editorship of Prolepsis: The Heidelberg Review of English Studies and the book series Disputatio as well as membership on the advisory board of Making the Middle Ages (U of Sydney, Australia), Studies in Medievalism (St. Louis U), Ritus et Artes (U of Copenhagen, Denmark), and Perspicuitas (U of Essen-Duisburg, Germany). Utz has been the recipient of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts "Outstanding Teaching Award" and "Faculty Excellence Award," the University's "Donald N. McKay Research Award," "Philipp G. Hubbard Award for Outstanding Educator," and "Distinguished Scholar Award," and the Iowa State Board of Regents "Award for Faculty Excellence."
