Here's a list of magazines and scenario packs that I own and that are still available. I have many TPP products that are no longer available (like all the TOT packs and a lot of things from Critical Hit). This list does not include HASL modules; reviews of "more significant" products like HASLs or packs with maps can be found at this page.
Note that this is a list of products that I own. Unlike others on the Mailing List, I do not make judgements about products I have not seen. I'll give my opinion on each, as well as score them with a 5-star system:
* = do not buy
** = might be ok, but be careful
*** = you won't be disappointed, but you won't love it
**** = impressive and fun;
***** = wonderful!
1. CH Magazine v4 #1. This magazine includes 8 scenarios of variable interest. Some are pretty fun (Troteval Farm, Big Cat's Den, and Outskirts of Lemburg) while others are less so (The Stand-Off, BARs Against Panzers). Neat scenario replay of BdF. Includes unmounted counters for use in The Stand-Off. Several good articles; recommended. Rating: ***1/2
2. CH Magazine v4 #2. This magazine has some very fine scenarios, indluding one of my favorites: Hard Cactus (set in Tunisia 1943, with Germans attacking Americans). Other good ones are Close to the Edge (can't go wrong with scenarios on the Red Barricades map) and the set of three Paddington Bears scenarios. The magazine includes a village overlay (about the size of a half-board) which is used in other CH scenarios. Recommended. Rating: ****
3. CH Magazine v6 #1. This magazine has some significant problems. The scenarios do not look terribly interesting, with the exception of Wide Diamond, set on the StB II map. The magazine's quality is terrible. It looks as if it is a set of photocopies of photocopies; some of it is barely legible. And since it's black-and-white from cover to cover, the over-all appeal is very low. Not recommeneded. Rating: *
4. CH Magazine v6 #2. This magazine is a huge improvement over 6-1. It includes a bunch of scenarios set on seperate card stock pages (rather than stapeled into the magazine) focussing on early-war actions, including two more scenarios set on the Stonne map. One late-war east front scenario is in there too, though. Furthermore, there are two new CGs for Stonne. One is a short one (7 scenarios), while the other is a "biggie" that combines the CG from the original module with the short one in the magazine to cover the entire battle for Stonne (sort of like RB CG III). The articles in the magazine are interesting as well, an include a tour of the original Stonne scenarios as well as a piece on the design of Stonne by Pedro Ramis. Nicely done, and one of the best issues to-date. Recommended ****
5. CH Magazine Special Edition 97. This is the Stalingrad Special Edition, and it includes the Grain Elevator map and CG. The large scenario in the mag that is played on the GE map is very cool, but the CG is not (it's unwinable by the Germans). Several of the other scenarios are quite cool, though, including one monster for the DTW map, a fun Bulge scenario, and a cool looking Tunisia scenario with a composite US/Brit force. Recommended, but the unbalanced GE CG is a bummer. Rating: ***
6. CH Magazine Special Edition 2000. This is the Operation Compass Special Edition. It includes a slew (22!) of scenarios, all set in the early desert war (i.e. pre-Afrika Corps battles between the Brits and the Italians). Three huge historical scenarios take place on the HASL map included with the magazine. The map is decent (it's desert, with some sand dunes, a few buildings, and a hill) although some of Sand outlines are difficult to see. I fixed it by lightly tracing a pencil along the outlines. With so many scenarios, there are plenty of options to choose from: big, small, set-piece attack against forts, mobile battles, lots of AFVs, no AFVS. Scenario design notes are included in the magazine which is always fun. Recommended. Rating: ****
7. ASL News (Euro-Pack) I. 8 reprinted ASL News/Euro scenarios, including classics such as Motorcycles at Zjitomir and First Contact, First Defeat. All 8 scenairos are early-war (nothing after 1941). Printed on good card stock. Nothing that you'll necessarily need to have, but you wouldn't be disappointed if you got 'em. Recommended. Rating: ***
8. Euro Pack 2 (Battle of the Bulge). 8 reprinted ASL News scenarios focussing on Battle of the Bulge actions. Some of them are interesting (Leapfrog, Fuel Depot #2, and Devils in the Graveyard which is played on the Stoumont map from KGP I). Others are forgettable. A mixed bag, but if you're looking to pick up some Battle of Bulge scenarios, this is it. Recommended to those interested. Be aware that one scenario requires the ASL News mapboard. I'm not sure if this even available any more...it was at one time directly from CH. Rating: **1/2
9. Euro Pack 3 (Late War). 8 reprinted ASL News scenarios set in 1944 or later (any theater). Like the Euro Pack 2, some of them are interesting (Breakthrough Towards Tarnopol and L'Amour, L'Amour, L'Amour). The rest of them look a bit dicey or too esoteric. Recommended for scenario collectors. Rating: **1/2
10. Euro Pack 5 (East Front). 8 scenarios (2 are ASL News reprints, 1 is an old SL remake). The quality of this pack is a notch below the previous Euro Packs, with only black and white printing and low-resolution graphics. A couple of good armor clashes (early to mid war), but when one thinks "East Front" massive cataclysmic battles come to mind, and there just aren't any in this pack. A ho-hum bunch of scenarios I guess. Recommended for scenario collectors. Rating: **
11. OAF Pack I. 10 reprinted scenarios from On All Fronts. Late war smash-mouth battles, with plenty of options for both sides in pretty much every scenario (including a a few with variable OBs and choice of reinforcement entry points to add fog of war). These scenarios are fun; the only thing about the Pack is the non-traditional OB layout (done using TO&E trees). Includes unmounted counters for one scenario (set in the Korean war) as well as an overlay that is used in one scenario. Recommended. Rating: ***1/2
12. Paddington Bears 97 Pack. 8 scenarios on good card stock. Big improvement in printing over the 96 pack. This pack has a couple of highly-played scenarios (Marked for Death and Under Seige). It also includes a Spanish Civil War scenario. In the Paddington Bears tradition, the scenarios are designed to be smaller, but still interesting and not dicey. Good for playing if you only have an evening. Recommended. Rating: ***1/2
13. Paddington Bears 98 Pack. 8 more tourney-sized scenarios from Down Under. This pack has the popular "First and Inches" (although I don't think it's as good as some say), "Steamrollers" a late-war East Front heavy metal duel between the big Soviet and German AFVs, and an interesting scenario with the Italians and Yugoslavs. The Bears make good scenarios. Recommended. Rating: ***1/2
14. Rout Pack III. Unlike Rout Packs I and II, these are not reprinted Rout Report scenarios. Instead, the are 8 new ones, including a couple of early-war German vs. French scenarios and some esoteric material as well (a scenario set in Madagascar and another where Germans and Russians race to recover the wreckage of a downed plane carrying a German division commander). In all, several unique scenarios with VC that might offer a good change of pace from "take x number of buildings" or "exit x number of VP" situations. Recommended. Rating: ***
15. Total Pacific Theater Pack I. This is a collection of 8 PTO scenarios, done by some of the best designers, including Pete Shelling and Steve Swann. Most focus on battles between the Brits and the IJA, and some scenarios also have colonial troops represented by Allied minors fighting alongside the Brits! A good looking slugging match between the IJA and the US is in there as well. Some very unique scenarios, and a refreshing addition to the collection of PTO actions we have in ASL. Includes a sheet of counters of Brit infantry and some status markers that are needed for a couple of scenarios. Recommended. Rating: ***1/2
16. Total East Front Pack I. This is a collection of 8 east front scenarios, portraying actions from 1941 through the last month of the war. The "centerpiece" of the pack is a set of four tourney-sized scenarios set in Vienna, 1945, designed by me! The other four scenarios are large, meaty, "throwbacks to Beyond Valor". Every scenarion in the pack has a combined arms element to it (except one, which is an all-armor battle in the summer of 1944). Although my designs represent 50% of the pack, I'll still offer a rating (but you can take it with a grain of salt, given my obvious bias). Recommended. Rating: ***1/2
From Heat Of Battle
1. Recon By Fire. This magazine has 8 scenarios, offering a wide variety of action. Scenarios range from a German attack on a US artillery park to a 1941 desert battle, to a fight between Americans and Italians. Size ranges too, from big slugging matches to tourney-sized stuff playable in a short afternoon. The magazine also has some fascinating articles, and the whole thing is well-done and looks professional. Recommended. Rating: ****
All of the other magazines and scenario packs I own are now unavailable, but I'll offer some quick comments on them in case you come across them in a store or on-line.
From Kinetic Energy
These guys produced the Time on Target 1, 2, and 3 packs. These things are the pinnacle of third party production and represent the goal that any third party producer of ASL material should strive for. Excellent quality and well-researched. TOT 1 focusses on the Battle of the Bulge and includes 12 scenarios, including the tourney classic Tiger 222. Some of these are highly unballanced in original form, but KE released a set of "fixes" for them. TOT 2 is late war (April 1945) Brits vs Germans and has 20(!) scenarios. There is a wide variety of actions here, everything from British "Funny" engineering tansk to trying to deal with German 105L AA guns. The TOT 3 pack, with its German rare vehicle counters, is a great product and includes the "Best Scenario of 97" Dogs of War. Buy these if you come across them...you won't regret it. Highly recommeneded. Rating for all three: *****
KE also produced the March Madness 97 scenario pack (they put out a 98 Pack as well, but did not sell it on the market). There are some great scenarios in here, including Beyond the Pakfronts, Aces Over Eights, and Lion's Share. As with all KE products, you get a good mix of interesting actions, cool situations with unique VC, and some OBs with units that you normally don't see on your mapboards. Highly recommended. Rating: ****
From Schwerpunkt
Specializing in small scenarios, Schwerpunkt produced a series of top-notch scenario packs (1 through 6, although I only own 1 through 4). You'll see Schwerpunkt scenarios among the most-played third party stuff. You'll even see many Schwerpunkt scenarios with far more playings than official scenarios. Although known for small scenarios, their larger ones are quite good as well. Pomeranian Tigers from the first pack and Tabacchificio Fiocche from the second pack are on my all-time favorites list. Excellent quality (good printing, heavy card stock, traditional layout) makes these packs real winners. Highly recommended. Rating for all four packs: *****
From Bounding Fire Productions
Hell on Wheels is a 13-scenario pack focussing on the battles of the 2nd US Armored Division, although 1 scenario is an Arnhem battle set on the GSTK map. If you are a tread-head and like combined arms scenarios (for both attacker and defenders) this is a must if you can find it. It also includes an unmounted DASL map of decent quality. The map art is somewhat amature, though, and some of the terrain is difficult to discern. The scenarios are printed on heavy paper (not cardstock) in full color with VASL graphics for the unit depictions. This makes the scenario sheets a bit busy/ugly. Three scenarios from this pack showed up in Journal 2 (Inhumaine, Merzenhausen Zoo, and Guns of Naro). These three are good, but it still leaves a bunch that are still very good. The Journal also printed the article on AFV combat. Recommended, primarily for fun-factor rather than physical quality. Rating: ****
